Setting Up Newsgroups in Outlook Express

Newsgroups are online discussion forums that cover a variety of different subjects. From classic automobiles to gardening, you will be able to read and respond to thousands of different topics. To setup your Newnan Utilities' newsgroup service, please contact Technical Support at 770-683-5516 to verify username and password information. Once verified, you may setup Outlook Express as your news reader.

To access newsgroups from Outlook Express, you must first supply Outlook Express with some information. To open Outlook Express from your desktop:

Step 1

To access Outlook Express from your desktop:

1. Select Start

2. Select Programs or All Programs

3. Select Outlook Express

From the Opening Window of Outlook Express:

1. Select Tools from the Menu Bar

2. Select Accounts

After selecting the options above, you will be taken to the Internet Accounts Window.

From the Internet Accounts Window of Outlook Express:

1. Select the News tab

If you have previously setup Outlook Express as a newsgroup reader, you may see other accounts listed.

From the Internet Accounts Window of Outlook Express:

1. Select Add

2. Select News

After selecting the options above, you will be taken to the Internet Connection Wizard.

Upon entry into the Internet Connection Wizard, you will be asked to enter your Display name. This name will be the name that appears when someone is viewing your messages. Typically, your Display name is your first and last name and may contain both upper and lower-case letters.

After entering your Display name, click Next

After entering your Display name, you will be prompted to enter your email address. Your email address should be entered exactly as it appears on your data reference card.

After entering your email address, you will be prompted to enter server information.

Your news server is news.newnanutilities.org

Please ensure that the checkbox indicating that your news server requires a logon is checked.

After entering your server information, you will be prompted to enter your Logon information.

1. Please ensure that your Account Name is your username name only. It should be entered exactly as it appears on your data reference card.

2. Please enter your password in the space provided exactly as it appears on your data reference card.

After entering all of the information above, the Internet Connection Wizard will prompt you to save your changes by selecting the finish button.

1. Click Finish to save your changes.

After saving your changes, you will be taken back to the Internet Accounts dialog box. You should now see your Newnan Utilities newsgroup service listed under the Account information.

1. Click Close to continue.

After closing the Internet Accounts dialog box, you will be prompted to download newgroups from the newly added news account.

1. Click Yes to download your newsgroups.

After selecting yes to download newsgroups to your account, you will see a dialog box updating you to the progress of the download. Due to the vast number of newsgroups to which you can subscribe, this may take a moment to complete. Once complete, you will be prompted to subscribe to newsgroups.

You may subscribe to any number of newsgroups that may be of interest. You may use the scroll bar to scroll through the selections or you may type words within the supplied textbox to locate newsgroups containing specific text.
